More people tuned in to see the 2022 Oscars than last year’s record-low audience, but it was still far from previous years.
Variety reported on Monday that Nielsen’s time-zone-adjusted quick national estimates put the nearly four-hour program at 15.36 million viewers. Following the 2021 ceremony, which had an all-time low audience of 10.4 million viewers and forced the Academy and ABC to rethink their approach to attract more viewers, this year’s awards show has had an increase in viewers of 56%, according to the data.

Smith’s emotional apology to the Academy, in which he said that the slap was an act of self-defence to protect his family, prompted even more outrage on the Internet. A stunning lack of consideration for tonal transitions marred the ceremony’s rapid progression. When it came to the montage of the best five candidates in both situations, viewers could not comprehend what they saw because of the lack of intro, explanation, or hoopla.
